Chapter 33

While the small group waited for Jane to return, Smith pulled out a map of Berlin and spread it across the coffee table. They all gathered around it, ready to hear Smith’s plan, everyone finally having agreed that they really didn’t have any other options.

“If this goes wrong . . .” Erik said. “If anyone I care about is hurt . . .”

“Stick to the plan and we have nothing to worry about, little kitty.”

Erik had to fight down the urge to say more, to make Smith understand how important the people in the room with them were. Kelsey was more than just his girlfriend. She was his best friend, and after Detective Kincaid had been murdered and Erik had no one else to turn to, she’d stepped in to help. She’d risked her life for him—and almost died because of it. He owed her everything.

And Lars, he was Erik’s brother. Sure, they didn’t always get along, but Lars would do anything to keep Erik safe. Including sacrifice himself, which was what scared Erik most about him being there. He wanted to make sure Smith understood that, but Smith just brushed the words off and turned his attention back to the map, pointing to a big green blob.

“This is the Tiergarten. Recognize it? You should. That’s where you first ran into Johann.”

“We’re not going back there, right? All those trees. He could have any number of guys waiting in them.”

“Correct, we’re not going back there, we’re going here.” Smith pointed to a spot just to the southeast of the giant park. “Potsdamer Platz. The busiest square in Berlin.”

“And why there?” Erik asked.

“People. Lots and lots of people. Hard to abduct someone, much less murder them with all of those witnesses.”

“Yeah, I’m not buying that,” Lars said before Smith had even finished his sentence. “What if they just put a gun to your back?”

“And shoot you?”

“Why not? The gunshot would cause pandemonium and then any number of things could happen. Big crowd equals big distraction.”

“Great point, brother Lars, but that’s a trick that works in our favor too.” Smith read the doubt in Lars’s face and cracked a smile. “I give you a gun, you see things going wrong, you shoot it, people panic, our martial-art-proficient Bishop and Pawn surprise their would-be captors, and suddenly Johann is our hostage.”

“And what if they just walk up, put a hole in Erik’s head, chaos ensues, they disappear into the crowd, and I’m down a brother?” Lars retorted.

“And what if a unicorn floats down from the heavens and shits a rainbow and we all go home happy? We can play the what-if game all damn night, but the goal isn’t to point out what might happen but to be prepared if it does. We make a tight enough plan, we increase our odds of getting back here safe. We nitpick every little facet of the plan, we just sow doubt into our own minds. How does everyone feel right now? Cuz I can’t have nerves.
